Submissions have opened up to contribute to the 2026 Bedford County Time Capsule, prepared to preserve the legacy of Bedford County and celebrate the United States’ 250th Anniversary of Independence.
On July 3, the capsule will be buried at the grounds of the Historic Courthouse and will remain closed for 50 years until the country’s 300th Anniversary of Independence in 2076.
County Mayor Chad Graham emphasized the importance of capturing our history today in a written statement.
“Our goal is to capture the unique spirit, culture, and daily life of Bedford County as it exists today,” said Graham. “This capsule will be sealed with the intent of being opened in 50 years, offering a window into the lives for those celebrating our county’s future.”
The Mayor’s Office requested each community in the county to provide one item that best represents their identity.
“What we’re doing with the capsule is to ensure that the materials inside will be preserved in themselves,” said County Archivist Carol Roberts. “We want to make sure that we document our feelings as a country now and the past 250 years of our existence.”
Roberts emphasized the importance of keeping the contents inside the capsule at “museum quality” when they are revealed again in 50 years.
Submissions remain open until June 22, with the general guidelines being that all items must be family-friendly, non-perishable and non-hazardous. An application must be submitted to the County Archives department. For any questions regarding additional requirements, the department is open for questions until the deadline.
