FRANKLIN — A year ago, Shelbyville Central’s Logan McBee took third in the TSSAA Class 2A 220-pound bracket in the state wrestling tournament.
Finishing ahead of him in second place was Garret Crowder of Dobyns Bennett.
Throughout his senior year, McBee wanted nothing more than to get to the top of the podium during his final season with Shelbyville Central.
He did just that.
On Saturday, McBee etched his name into Shelbyville history by defeating Crowder in the Class 2A 215-pound weight class to become the reigning state champion.
McBee’s road to the championship was paved in dominant fashion over the two-day event held at the Williamson County Ag Expo.
McBee posted wins via decision, pin, major decision, and a 5-1 decision to qualify for the championship match against Crowder.
In the championship match, McBee left little doubt the would become the state champion in his bracket, dominating from the beginning until the final whistle, with Crowder only recording two points in the second period.
McBee won the championship match with an 8-2 decision.
McBee wasn’t the only Bedford County representation in the championship rounds of the state wrestling tournament.
Cascade’s Isaac Chapa capped a brilliant career for the Champions in the Class 1A 190-pound bracket.
Chapa forged his way to the championship match through several hard-fought victories.
He opened the tournament with a slim, 2-0 decision, before recording two-straight wins via pin to reach the semifinal round.
He punched his ticket to the championship match in dramatic fashion with a 3-1 sudden victory over Darious Sudderth of Alcoa.
Chapa scored the match-clinching points with an overtime takedown to qualify for the title match.
Like his previous match, the championship 190-pound match was nothing short of a thriller, and while Chapa recorded the first and last points of the match, Tullahoma’s Connor Avans was able to hang on for the 4-2 decision.
Cascade’s Vayden Moore also reached the podium on Saturday, finishing third in the Class 1A 138-pound class.
Moore took a tough loss in the second match of the tournament and was pinned at the 5:07 mark of the match.
He responded with a 15-4 major decision, a win via pin, a 9-8 decision and an 11-9 sudden victory in the consolation match to secure third place.
In total, Cascade sent six wrestlers to the state tournament.
Joining Chapa and Moore were Briston Moore, Trenton Giel, Chase Sutter and Hayden Dowell.
