The Tennessee Department of Human Resources (TDHR) Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) hosted a “Community Job and Resources” event in conjunction with the Fly Arts Center on April 8.

Businesses, non-profits, and government services were present at the event, allowing for residents in the community to connect with potential work opportunities and a chance to network with those in the county.

As part of a push from the Division’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) programs, career fair events have been held across the state to promote employment goals and independence for individuals with disabilities and other disadvantages.

DRS Area Manager Linda Fisher highlighted the VR program’s long-term vision of preparing people to become self-sustaining.

“The agency offers many different services and resources to support individuals at every stage of their journey toward meaningful employment and self-sufficiency,” Fisher said. “Recognizing that no two people are the same, services are tailored to meet each person’s unique needs and goals.”

She also emphasized the importance of local cooperation and its part in making the vision of the DRS possible.

“Our connection with The Fly Arts Center is rooted in our ongoing commitment to community engagement and partnership,” she continued. “Through our VR program, we recognize that our ability to help individuals achieve their employment goals is strengthened through meaningful relationships with local partners.”

Bedford County Schools (BCS) was present at the event, with Director of Human Resources Neil Watson representing them at their booth. He emphasized the diversity of jobs in the district.

“We do a lot of work with vocational rehab, including hiring new part-time employees from the (VR) program,” said Watson. “There’s a lot of skillsets that go into the workforce of our school district.”

Motlow State Community College (MSCC) was also represented at the event, promoting their TN Reconnect program, meant for adults over the age of 23 who wish to return to education.
