For the first time in program history, Shelbyville Central baseball is headed to the TSSAA State Baseball Tournament. Behind dominant pitching, timely hitting and two gritty postseason performances, the Golden Eagles swept Hendersonville in the Class AAAA sectional series this week, punching their ticket to Murfreesboro and cementing the biggest moment in school baseball history.
Shelbyville opened the best-of-three series Thursday night with a dramatic 5-4 victory in 11 innings before finishing the sweep Friday afternoon with a commanding 6-0 shutout win behind a masterful outing from Brody Thomas.
Game 1: Shelbyville Central – 5, Hendersonville – 4
(11 Innings)
In Game 1, the Golden Eagles survived a tense extra-inning battle that lasted deep into the night. After Shelbyville grabbed an early lead on a two-run homer from Caden Peacock in the opening inning, Hendersonville answered with runs in the fourth and fifth to move in front.
The Eagles responded with runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game and force extra innings.
The breakthrough finally came in the bottom of the 11th. With the bases loaded and tension filling the stadium, a Hendersonville error allowed the winning run to cross the plate, setting off a celebration as Shelbyville secured a dramatic walk-off victory and moved within one win of the state tournament.
The Golden Eagles finished with 12 hits in the opener. Peacock led the offense with his two-run home run, while Stephen Bobo tripled and scored twice. Elijah Westbrooks delivered two hits and an RBI, and Braxton Vari added two hits while scoring twice. Blake Bone drove in a run, Case Davis doubled, and Ashton Whorley, Brody Thomas and Miles McCullough all contributed hits in the balanced offensive effort.
Shelbyville also received another strong postseason pitching performance. Kaleb Maillet worked the first six innings, striking out six, before Camron Burke tossed a scoreless seventh. Bobo then took over and completely shut down Hendersonville in relief, allowing just one hit over four scoreless innings while striking out nine to earn the win.
Game 2: Shelbyville Central – 6, Hendersonville – 0
If Game 1 showed Shelbyville’s resilience, Game 2 showcased complete dominance. With history on the line Friday afternoon, Brody Thomas delivered one of the most clutch pitching performances the program has ever seen, firing a complete-game shutout as the Golden Eagles blanked Hendersonville 6-0 to complete the sweep.
Shelbyville wasted little time taking control, scoring twice in the first inning before putting the game away with a four-run seventh.
Thomas was in command from the opening pitch, scattering just three hits across seven shutout innings while striking out five and walking two. Hendersonville never mounted a serious scoring threat as the right-hander continued Shelbyville’s dominant postseason pitching run.
The Golden Eagles backed Thomas with timely offense throughout the afternoon. Elijah Westbrooks paced Shelbyville at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Peacock added another big performance with three RBIs, while Bobo scored twice. Blake Bone reached base twice and scored two runs, while Case Davis, Braxton Vari and Brody Thomas each added key contributions.
Now, after two historic nights and a sectional sweep, Shelbyville Central (31-9), is headed to Spring Fling for the first time ever — and the Golden Eagles are taking plenty of momentum with them. The state tournament is scheduled to start on Wednesday. Official game times and locations are TBD and will be posted when available.
