Hundreds took to the Shelbyville Municipal Airport (SMA) to partake in the annual Aviation Day event on April 26, with a paper airplane competition, helicopter rides, live music from Chase Clanton and more making the experience.

With airplanes, helicopters, drones and more present at the event, residents of the county were able to get an exciting experience with the local aviation industry.

“A big part of this is to introduce the public to aviation,” said SMA Director Paul Perry. “Our product is an experience.”

Perry also commented on the new developments with the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) Aerospace Campus in relation to SMA and Aviation Day.

“I think Aviation Day is a win-win for the airport and MTSU,” he continued. “We want people to come to this city and have a safe space to learn about aviation.”

MTSU Aerospace Department Chair Chaminda Prelis expressed his enthusiasm about the future of MTSU Aerospace Campus’ relationship with SMA.

“Overall, it’s a great relationship with us both being here. From an MTSU perspective, it gives us a lot of space and potential opportunities for new programs,” said Prelis. “Our primary goal is to inspire people to get into aviation, not only because of the huge need but to get involved with a dynamic and growing industry.”
